Wind power is an alternative source of power that many today are looking to in order to lower their energy bills. How much power can a wind turbine produce? That is a question you will often find yourself asking. There is no definitive answer, but there are guidelines that you can follow that allow you to determine the most realistic estimation of potential power that can be produced.

The following is the most common formula used to determine the yearly power output of a small wind turbine:

(Annual output in kilowatt-hours) = (0.01328) x (blade diameter in feet)^2 x (average mph wind speed at your location)^3

The following is a simplified formula:

Power = 0.01328(D)^2(V)^3

There are two factors in this formula that significantly affect the energy output, the blade diameter being the first. The energy increased as a direct cause of increasing the blade diameter is akin to a square function. By increasing the blade diameter by a factor of 2, the power output will be 4 times as potent.

Although this is rather impressive, the most important aspect is the wind speed. Energy is a cubic function of wind speed, so for best performance, the wind turbine should be placed in an area with higher winds. The more wind speed, the more powerful the energy output will become. As has been demonstrated, wind is the deciding factor in a wind generator’s power output.

Instead of spending your hard earned money on large diameter blades, better results can be achieved by selecting a location with more wind exposure, or by making use of a high tower on which to place your wind turbine.
