You have two choices if you are considering incorporating some form of alternative energy in order to decrease your energy bills. One of which is a wind generator, such as a windmill or wind turbine. Another option is purchasing or building a solar power system that harnesses the power of the sun to provide your home with energy. The best solar power products are solar cells and solar panels. Both solar-based power and wind-based power are effective, but neither are free of issues. The most notable issue of course is the possible lack of wind or sun, which will prevent you from generating power. It may seem that such occurrences are unpreventable, but that is not the case. The best solution to this problem is to create a hybrid system.

A hybrid system is a combination of two different systems, for example, a wind power and solar power generator. Combining two or more systems will make for a much more steady production of power, with less potential for outage in case one source of power is lacking. Wind Generators can only produce power when exposed to wind, and likewise, solar panels can only produce power when exposed to sunlight. Solar panels are thus useless during the night and on very cloudy days. For the most reliable production of energy, a hybrid system of alternative energy is without doubt very beneficial.

If you need a steady and constant production of power while off the grid, adding an engine driven electrical generator to your hybrid system would be best. The purpose of this generator is to charge your storage batteries in case there comes a day in which no wind or sun are available to provide power. While this may seem convenient, the catch is that such a generator would require a heavy supply of diesel, gasoline or propane. The amount of fuel needed to supply your engine driven electrical generator would depend entirely on the size and the number of batteries needed.

Before beginning construction, it is important to keep these things in mind. What are your power requirements, how much reserve power will you need etc.
